The 64-year-old has hosted the iconic football show for the last time

Gary Lineker was reportedly overheard making some 'remarks' about BBC director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski, with the 64-year-old's time on Match of the Day now over.

The ex-England striker bowed out of the popular football highlights show on Sunday night following the conclusion of the Premier League season.

Lineker's exit from the Beeb was confirmed back in November, with Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan announced as his MOTD replacements.

He had originally been expected to keep working with the broadcaster until after the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

But Lineker was forced to leave early after sharing a pro-Palestine post on social media that sparked an anti-Semitism row.

It has already been revealed that the 64-year-old had a rocky relationship with Kay-Jelski, the BBC's director of sport.

And a source has told The Sun that Lineker was actually overheard making some 'remarks' about the BBC supremo, which made it clear there was no 'love lost' between the pair.

“By the end of Gary’s tenure at BBC Sport he didn’t have much time for Alex," the insider was quoted as saying.

“When he was working on the FA Cup final, just two days before he quit, Alex came over to where Gary was and he just walked off without a word.

“He made a couple of remarks about Alex in earshot of people working around them. It’s clear there’s no love lost.

"Gary is really well liked and there are plenty of people who joked that they agreed with what he said.”

Kay-Jelski previously worked at the Daily Mail, while he also helped launch The Athletic.

And Lineker did recently raise eyebrows by criticising his boss, insisting that he lacks 'TV experience' as he plans to overhaul Match of the Day.

"I think (a regime change) has (happened), and that's what I was alluding to (in an earlier interview)," he told the Daily Mail.

"He has his reasons, he wants to change Match of the Day a bit.

"Ultimately, I don’t think they will, because I don’t see how you move a highlights show away from being about highlights.

"I think he wants more journalists - he has come from that background. He has got no television experience."

Cates, Logan and Chapman will bring a balance to MOTD as the show looks to bring in new viewers.

Lineker did say, however, that he thinks the show will 'pretty much stay as it is'.

He continued: "I suspect, for all the thoughts of change, that the show will pretty much stay as it is. That’s my gut feeling.

"I think they’d be mad, absolutely mad, to mess around with Match of the Day. It has taken years and years to get the right balance.

"I would be nervous if they fiddled with it too much. It’s that old adage, 'If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it'."
